Description
Pauldrons “Tristan” provide the protection of the shoulder joint, half of the shoulder, shoulder blades and collar bones by the steel plates. This name is often used for shoulder protection which was a part of Milanese armor, as opposed to segment shoulder protection – spaulders which protect lesser area but are more light weighted.
While developing pauldrons “Tristan” we based on the examples of Lombard armor. Intending to create reliable armor for buhurt foot fight we created the set which protects from hits from all sides. One of the problems usually is the protection of the shoulder blade from the hand side. If you move in the certain way space between back and shoulder protection can appear, and you can be traumatized. The main danger is two handed weapon. The hit could be made not on purpose but because in the moment you could not be noticing that the potentially dangerous space has appeared. That is why we enlarged back plates so that such a space would not appear. However, you always need to remember that the armor does not guarantee 100% protection from injuries. Right technique, stand, experience in mass tournaments are also very important.
Also in the process of development and testing we understood that such overlap (bottom plates lap over the top ones) allows to achieve the maximum movability. At the same time we don’t replicate some peculiarities which are present on the museum exhibits, for example ribs or anatomic overlap on the back. It will make the product more expensive but we doubt that it will make the pauldrons better. Although such shoulder protection was used by the cavalry, modern sportsmen rate such protection quite high.
Purchasing pauldrons “Tristan” you should remember that for the full arm protection you will need armor for the rest of the arm. For example plate arm protection “Tristan”. By the way, it is possible to attach rondelles to these pauldrons. You don’t need them for buhurt at all but they can serve you, if painted nicely, for completing your look. For jousting they would be appropriate, as rondels can protect you from thrusts in the underarm area.
Although pauldrons “Tristan” are quite multipurpose, if you are in 1 on 1 tournament you should look for more light protection. Fighting with one opponent you are not likely to expose your back to hits. There is more light and movable armor for this nomination.
