Description
Great bascinet Sailsbury is a composite image of such helmets in the medieval England. There is no exact artefact, but all details and geometry are real. Both reenactors and sports fighters can use it, for the foot fight as well as jousting. The helmet is quite practical, but vision and breathing ability are not the best. For example, for the foot fight or buhurt you can purchase Topfhelm “Griffon”. While being not so expensive, it can provide better breathing and vision. But if you want right reconstruction, it makes sense to pay attention to this grand bascinet.
The visor is removable, so if you have a need, you can order a second one. For example, the one like in the great bascinet “Curburg”, for jousting. Pay attention that for such type of sport you need to fixate the helmet on the body. For such purpose we can add straps on the lower edge from the front and back. On the body you would also need buckles. Therefore, if you are looking for the armor for jousting please inform us about it.
Great bascinet is the modern version of the common bascinet. It first appeared in 15th century and it had additional protection in the form of a steel plate on the front part of the helmet. It firstly was completed by the sharp visor like hundsgugel. By the middle of the of 15th century the shape of the great bascinet was changed — it became more round, the neck protection was attached to the breastplate, the visor obtained the half-spherical shape with many holes, sometimes without vision cutouts. Great bascinet was popular in Germany, where it was in the group of German Milanese armor and export Milanese armor. It came out of use at the end of the 15th cent. The main difference of the late great bascinets from armets — unmovable neck protection and sharp skull of the bascinet, also removable neck protection and spherical skull of the armets.
